It’s the most ambitious urban development project since Hafencity: Oberbillwerder, located in between the Allermöhe and Lohbrügge neighborhoods. The winning design by the Danish-Dutch-German team of ADEPT Aps, Karres + Brands and Transsolar Energietechnik is titled “The Connected City“, neatly merging 7.000 apartments and townhouses into what is now open field. The new neighborhood will create around 5.000 jobs and is designed to limit the need to use or even own a car.
Oberbillwerder will be connected to the S-Bahn network through the already existing Allermöhe station, with the quarter spreading North from there. It is planned to create a dense shopping and business area close to the station, fading into residential and recreational areas with public sports grounds, playgrounds, and easy to access to the nature surrounding the quarter. Central parking and delivery garages are located to reduce the transportation distances and allow for bikes and pedestrians to be at the active center of the new neighborhood, thus being dubbed “The Active City”.
The winning design will be up for debate in the local Bergedorf parliament by the end of 2018 to be then given a green light by the mayor’s office in early 2019. The construction is expected to be completed by the end of the 2030s.
